Do I need to be social?

Construction Social Media

Do I need to be social? That is one of the first questions I hear from many clients. That or “Why would my business be relevant on Social Media?” A lot of businesses in the AEC industry work through a vast referral network of different companies, sub-contractors, contractors, lawyers, architects, engineers etc. Many people think their company can thrive on that. But, if you think about it – the handshake and business card swap has gone one step further with the advent of social networks such as LinkedIn, or Twitter. It’s not all cat video’s on the vast social network.

Anymore, what happens when you are considering getting into “business” with a company, or person? You Google them, right? You try to dig up any dirty little secret that would potentially stop you from doing business with that person. Or, you attempt to find reviews from other people in your industry who were looking for the same answers or results you were.

So, when someone Google’s you, or your business, what do you want to come up first? Would it be your website (hopefully if you have the right SEO playbook in place, it would)? Or your LinkedIn profile? Or that article from your hometown newspaper that you won the pie eating contest when you were 13 years old? Anymore, Social Media sites have such a high domain authority (website relevance index scale) that they rank higher than some companies brand sites.

In this instance, making sure that you have a consistent branding message across the various Social Networks (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, GooglePlus primarily) will help keep your business relevant in our day and time of instant gratification notification. We need to know the answers five minutes ago, so being branded across all platforms will give you the one up on your competitor in the same realm.

As Digital Disruption Advocate Erik Qualman states – “The ROI of Social Media is your business will still exist in 5 years.” Even if that is a possibility, are you willing to take the risk that it won’t be?
